How do I manage Rh typing in obstetric patients?

A 30-year-old G2P1 female is 12 weeks pregnant and her red blood cells (RBCs) type as A1 with a negative antibody screen. The transfusion medicine service learns that the patient typed as A– during her first pregnancy and she received Rh immune globulin (RhIG). How would you proceed to clarify the patient’s D type and to evaluate the need for prophylaxis to prevent hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN)?
